Where?  There are many wiki sites that you can choose, but I'm going to introduce you to wikispaces.com because that is the one that my sample is hosted by.   First, go to wikispaces.com .  You will need to open an account in order to create your own space, but you will not be disappointed by using the free version at first.  Here's how you do it!

  1. Create a username
  2. Set your password
  3. Enter your email address
  4. You can get started right away by selecting your space name!  I used "Pickens Wiki Tree" for mine!

Get Started!

Once you've created your space, you'll be taken to an introductory page that includes links to answers that you will want to know!  If you're not ready to get started yet because you want your questions answered first, click on the links below and follow the wikispaces tutorials.

  • Getting Started  Here you can walk through all of the introductory items to creating your own wiki, including:  managing your space, editing your pages, and inviting members to your space.  Don't worry if it seems like a lot to remember--I'll be walking you through actually creating your pages later.
  • Video Tutorial Everyone learns differently, so you may want to check out this video tutorial that will help get you started!

Managing Your Space~

When you are finished with the introductory sections, close out that window by clicking the little "x" in the top right corner.  On the left side of your screen, click the link to "Manage Space".  This is where you can change your mind about your privacy settings, change the "Look and Feel" of your space by selecting a different design template, or you can opt to pay to have your wiki set to "private" so that only the people you invite can view it.  This may be a good idea if you want to post images of your children or any kind of private information.

Now that you've set up a wiki space, it's time to get to work creating things to put on there!  Don't worry, we'll come back to more wiki help later.

Now you're ready to go on to Step 2

Adding and Editing Text and Links!
